Annual Commencement Departmental Awards
- Roland Walker Prize (1989)
- Established by friends and former students of Roland Walker, Professor Emeritus of Biology. The prize is awarded to seniors in the Department of Biological Sciences with a strong academic record and outstanding research performance.
- Five awards are given annually
- Harry Roy Research Prize (2018)
- This award is given annually to honor Professor Harry Roy, for his excellence as a scholar and teacher in the Department of Biological Sciences from 1976 through 2018 and his commitment to the importance of undergraduate research experiences. This prize is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate major who demonstrates creativity, innovation, and passion for research in life sciences.
- One award is given annually.
- Henry Ehrlich Prize (2012)
- The Henry Ehrlich Prize is awarded for excellence in research and scholarship to a graduate student in a PhD program in Biological Sciences or Biochemistry and Biophysics.
- Two awards are given annually.
Departmental Travel Award
- The Sterling Winthrop Travel Award
- Purpose: To support student travel to present research work at a national meeting. Five awards are given annually.
- Eligibility: Students in the BIOL and BCBP PhD graduate programs who have successfully passed the Candidacy Examination. A student can receive only one award during graduate studies.
- Nomination: The nomination for the award must be made by the thesis advisor. The nomination letter must include the status of progress of the student towards a PhD, a description of the work, and its significance. Attachment should include the abstract of the presentation, and the confirmation that it was accepted by the meeting organizing committee. In addition, at least one additional letter from a member of the thesis committee supporting the nomination must be included in the nomination packet.
- Submission: Nomination must be submitted to the Chair of the Departmental Awards Committee (currently George Makhatadze), with copies to the Department Head (currently Jennifer Hurley) and Dallas Dudley, one semester before expected travel (fall semester for spring travel, spring semester for summer travel, or summer semester for fall travel).
